Actions Upon Approach For Tesla Model 3/Y
In update 5.12, we introduced new powerful automations that we believe every Tesla owner would love. One of them came as a popular request from our community after Tesla introduced the automatic trunk feature inside the Model Y Juniper. Our users wanted it brought to the legacy Model 3/Y.
However, not only did we include it, but we went even further by allowing you to automatically open your trunk, frunk, driver’s door, and even charge port when you approach your vehicle. The automation is called Actions Upon Approach, and in this article, you will learn how it works and how to properly set it up.

How does it work?
Before proceeding with the follow-along steps, ensure that you have your Gen2 Commander installed.
1. First, open the S3XY App and go to the Commander’s tab, where all of our automations are located.
2. Select Actions Upon Approach and enable the toggle.
3. Scroll down, and you will see a tab called Single Press.
4. Select an action from 5 options - Climate Keep Only, Open Frunk, Open Trunk, Open Driver’s Door, Unlock Chargeport
5. (Optional) You can switch tabs and select another action for a double-press.
6. Open the driver’s door and press the button once or twice more. This will signal the car whether you want it to execute the single-press or the double-press action when you get back.
Keep in mind that when the activation method is triggered by the pressing of the driver’s door button, the Climate Keep Mode will be activated to ensure the car stays awake and prevent the Commander from falling asleep. To avoid unnecessary battery drain, you can set a countdown, and when it runs out, the Keep Mode will be turned off due to inactivity.
If you activate either of the two actions by mistake, simply pressing the brake pedal or deactivating the Climate Keep On feature will stop it.
Example Setup:
To better understand how the automation works, here is an example setup you can try:
Single Press: Open Frunk
Double Press: Open Driver’s Door
Timer: 120 minutes
Activation Method: Single Press
This means that after I open the driver’s door and press the button once more, if I return within the next two hours, the action that will be triggered is the automatic opening of the frunk, because that’s the one I’ve assigned to a single press.
We also added a toggle, called Always Presenting Door, that automatically opens the driver’s door every time you approach your car. Just make sure your Tesla stays awake via Sentry Mode or another method so the Commander doesn’t fall asleep.
