This FAQ covers the most common questions about installing, powering, connecting, and using the S3XY Dash. If you’re setting it up for the first time or troubleshooting something, this should help you avoid common pitfalls. We’ll keep this page updated as new features roll out and issues get fixed.

Do I need anything additional to connect the new Dash [Standalone] to my existing Commander? I already have S3XY Gadgets in my car (Buttons, Knob or Stalks) including the Commander.

No. Everything you need to connect the Dash to your existing Commander is included in the S3XY Dash [Standalone] package. The box includes the required cable and the small power adapter that provides power to the Dash. You don’t need to purchase any additional accessories.

Is there an installation video with more details?

Yes! We have three videos to help you get started:

Are there any known bugs that I should be aware of?

Yes. Below is the list of currently known issues that we’re actively working on fixing in upcoming software updates:
- When the S3XY App is connected to the Commander, data to the Dash may be paused and the Dash can disconnect from time to time. For now, please avoid using the Dash and the App at the same time.
- Updating the Dash from the App is stuck at 5% or 10% - make sure to reboot the dash from the USB cable and try again. If it fails again, try updating the dash from the Dash itself Settings -> Update.
- CarPlay can still connect to your phone even when the Dash is turned off (outside the car) and the vehicle is locked. To prevent this, you can disable the Dash from your phone’s CarPlay settings.incorrect state.
- CarPlay may not start on the first connection attempt even though Bluetooth pairing is successful. In this case, the phone appears as paired, but CarPlay does not fully connect. This is usually resolved by powering off the Dash, waiting about 5 seconds, and then turning it back on. After the restart, CarPlay should connect normally.
-
On some vehicles, including the new Model Y Juniper, the Dash display may remain on while the car is charging. This happens because the vehicle keeps certain systems active during charging, which prevents the Dash from entering sleep mode. We are evaluating improvements to optimize this behavior in a future software update.
- Actions are not yet fully consistent – some actions may trigger the wrong function or show an incorrect state.

- Changing Dash settings from the S3XY App is currently not fully working.
- On some phones (mostly iPhones), even when the app goes to the background, the BLE connection is not always cleared. In this case, the Dash will not start receiving data. Even if you think you’re not using the app, the operating system may keep the connection active in the background.

Gen1 vs Gen2 Commander compatibility – does the Dash work with older Commanders?
No. The S3XY Dash requires a Gen2 Commander. Older Gen1 Commanders are not compatible and cannot provide the required data for the Dash. If you have an older Commander, you’ll need to upgrade to Gen2 to use the Dash.

Does CarPlay on the Dash need my phone to have internet?
Yes. CarPlay uses your phone’s connection for internet (maps, music streaming, etc.). Your phone must have mobile data enabled for CarPlay apps to work normally. The Dash itself does not provide internet.

Can the Dash show the Tesla map or navigation screen?
No. The Dash cannot mirror or show Tesla’s full map screen. The Dash can only display navigation-related data (for example, destination, ETA, remaining battery at arrival), but not the live Tesla map itself.

Front installation vs Rear installation – does the Commander port matter for Dash?
Yes. The Dash requires the Commander to be installed in the Front installation port (front right A-pillar OBD port).
If your Commander is currently installed in the Rear installation port (rear vent / center console area), you may need an additional cable or to relocate the Commander to the front port for the Dash to work correctly.
When ordering the Dash Standalone package, make sure to select the correct cable option based on whether you are using Front installation or Rear installation.

Will the Dash drain my car battery? (power consumption)
No. The Dash consumes very little power. Even if left powered for long periods, the energy usage is negligible and will not noticeably drain your Tesla’s battery.

I use my phone’s hotspot instead of Tesla Premium Connectivity. Will this work when I use CarPlay on the Dash?

Unfortunately, no. CarPlay uses Wi-Fi for streaming, so you can’t share your phone’s internet with the car via hotspot and use CarPlay on the Dash at the same time. This is a limitation of how CarPlay works on all devices, not something specific to the Dash.
Using CarPlay on the Dash does not block Tesla’s built-in navigation, Spotify, or Apple Music on the Tesla screen. Those continue to work normally as long as the car has internet access (for example, via Premium Connectivity or another source).

Can the S3XY Dash be powered by a regular USB-C cable for temporary testing?

Yes. The Dash can be powered using a standard USB-C cable (for example, from the center console) for initial setup and testing. However, many standard USB-C cables have connectors that are too thick to fit into the Dash’s recessed USB-C port. In such cases, a slimmer connector is required, or the cable housing may need minor modification (for example, carefully grinding down the outer plastic).

Is it safe to use the provided S3XY Dash USB-C power cable to charge other devices?

No. The included S3XY Dash USB-C cable supplies 16V directly from the Commander and is intended only to power the Dash. Using this cable with standard USB-C devices such as phones or tablets may cause permanent damage.

Will the Dash boot with any power adapter or power bank?

In most cases, yes. The Dash will boot from most USB-C power sources, including power banks and standard USB-C chargers. However, some chargers (for example, Apple’s 40W Dynamic Charger using AVS) may fail to boot the Dash. Switching to a different power adapter usually resolves the issue.

The Dash turns completely off after 5–10 seconds.

This is normal behavior when there is no vehicle data coming from the Commander. This can also happen if the S3XY App is currently connected to the Commander. Make sure the Commander is working properly and that the App is not connected when you want to use the Dash.

Can I power the Dash from a standalone power box instead of the Commander?

Yes. The Dash can be powered from standalone USB-C power boxes or third-party power adapters for bench testing or temporary setups. However, the Dash will not receive any vehicle data unless it is connected to a Commander. If you power the Dash without a Commander connected, it may turn off automatically after a few seconds due to missing vehicle data. This is expected behavior.

What mounting method is used for the S3XY Dash?

The Dash uses a 3M adhesive mount with a MagSafe-style magnetic head. The mount angle can be adjusted during installation only. When mounted under the windshield, the mount should remain straight. When mounted behind the steering wheel, the mount should be tilted upward so the Dash faces the driver’s line of sight. Once the desired angle is set, tighten the mount and avoid readjusting it repeatedly. An L-type hex key is included in the box to lock the mount securely in place.

Is the mount MagSafe? Can I use another mount?

Yes, the mount uses the MagSafe magnetic standard, but it does not support wireless charging. While it’s possible to use a different mount, it’s not recommended. The back of the Dash has a mechanical indentation that fits around the mount head to improve stability during vibrations (potholes, rough roads, etc.). Because of this design, MagSafe mounts or charger pucks with an outer diameter larger than 60 mm will not fit. Many non-charging MagSafe mounts are exactly 60 mm, but this varies by manufacturer. Always check the diameter before using a third-party mount.

What adhesive does the mount use?

The mount uses high-temperature-rated 3M VHB adhesive, designed to hold even in extreme conditions (above 150°C). If you experience adhesion issues, clean the surface thoroughly, use the spare adhesive pad included in the box, mount at room temperature, and leave the mount in place for 24 hours before attaching the Dash. If problems persist, you can replace the pad with another high-quality 3M (or equivalent) adhesive available locally.

Can I replace or reposition the Dash mount (for example, from the windshield to behind the steering wheel)?

Yes. The pre-installed adhesive is designed for one to two installations. If you need to reposition the mount multiple times or if adhesion weakens, use the spare 3M adhesive pad included in the box.

Does the S3XY Dash come with a screen protector?

Yes. The Dash comes with a factory-applied privacy and anti-glare filter. It reduces windshield reflections at night and improves visibility in the driver’s forward line of sight. The privacy effect works vertically (top and bottom viewing angles) but not horizontally, so passengers can still view the screen clearly. When the Dash is mounted behind the steering wheel, some users choose to remove the filter for better brightness and touch responsiveness.

The Dash brightness feels too low or dark.

If the Dash is mounted behind the steering wheel, removing the factory privacy filter can significantly improve brightness and touch responsiveness. The filter is mainly intended to reduce windshield glare at night when the Dash is mounted under the windshield.

The glare from the steering wheel and my hands on the Dash is too high during the day. How can I fix it?

A Light (white) theme is planned in an upcoming software update to improve daytime visibility. An Auto option will also be added to switch between Dark and Light themes based on Tesla’s UI theme or day/night conditions.

Does the Dash block airflow if mounted behind the steering wheel?

The Dash will block some airflow, but most of the air will still flow above and below the Dash and reach the driver. If maximum airflow is important to you, we recommend mounting the Dash under the windshield.

If I press the steering wheel button to execute an action, will this change the Follow Distance?

Yes. Currently, using the right scroll wheel to trigger actions on the Dash will also change the Follow Distance. We are working on improving this behavior in a future update.

How many Bluetooth connections can the Commander maintain?

Commander v6.3.1 or higher supports multiple connections (Buttons, Stalks, Knob, Dash, and Phone App). However, when both the App and the Dash are connected at the same time, vehicle data for stats and action states is currently not sent to either device. You can still use the App connection for configuration and software updates.

What should I do if the Dash frequently disconnects from the Commander?

This is a known beta issue. Make sure you are on the latest Dash software (v6.3.1 or higher and FW (v20 or higher) and Commander firmware (v20 or higher). If disconnects occur, unplug and reconnect the Dash power cable as a temporary workaround.

How can I check the Dash version?

Go to Dash Settings → System. You should see SW, BT1, BT2, and FW version information. If FW is missing or incomplete, go back and re-enter the System menu. If the issue persists, contact support with a photo of the System screen showing the full serial number.

When I go to Settings → Update, I see an older version than v6.3.1.

Make sure the Dash is connected to Wi-Fi with internet access. If the problem persists, contact support with a photo of the System screen and full serial number visible.

Which Commander firmware version is required for the Dash?

Commander v6.3.1 or higher is required for full Dash support.

How do I update the Dash if it is on very old firmware (v02–v07)?

Units with very old firmware require a one-time patch using the TelinkBleOTA process before they can use the standard in-app update system.

How can I increase CarPlay volume when using Dash audio output?

Go to Dash Settings → Volume (at the bottom of the page).

Can I use CarPlay on the Dash while routing phone calls through Tesla’s speakers and microphone? (Audio Output)

Yes. In the Dash settings, select Phone as the audio output. This allows calls and the microphone to remain with Tesla’s Bluetooth system while using CarPlay for visuals.

I don’t use Premium Connectivity and share internet from my iPhone to Tesla. Will it work when I connect my iPhone to the S3XY Dash for CarPlay?

No. CarPlay uses Wi-Fi for streaming, so you can’t share internet from your phone to Tesla at the same time.

Does the S3XY Dash require the mobile app for configuration?

Currently, configuration options are limited. A future version of the S3XY App will include a dedicated screen for Dash layout and widget customization.

How do I connect CarPlay or Android Auto to the Dash?

Open Bluetooth on your phone, connect to the device named “S3XY_Dash_XXXX”, and follow the pairing steps. For CarPlay, accept the CarPlay prompt when it appears. If you don’t see the prompt, make sure the Dash is on the latest software. If needed, restart both your phone and the Dash and try again.

Why are there two Bluetooth menus in the Dash settings?

The “S3XY Devices” menu is used to connect Enhance devices such as the Commander or Knob via BLE. The “Bluetooth” menu is used to manage phones for CarPlay or Android Auto.

Why does the Dash stay on after I leave the car?

This issue is fixed in Dash software v6.3.1 and newer.

Can I scroll through Dash pages using the steering wheel buttons?

Yes, the right scroll wheel can be used to switch pages. This can conflict with Autopilot speed adjustments or Commander automations. You can disable page scrolling in the Dash settings if needed.

Can I use the scroll wheel to control the Dash if gear-change automation is enabled in Commander?

Yes, but to avoid accidental gear changes we recommend enabling “Require brake for R-D” in the Scroll Wheel Button Automation settings.

What is the white line in the bottom-left corner of the screen during software updates?

This is a harmless visual glitch caused by the irregular shape of the display during updates. It does not affect normal operation.

Why does navigation show “No Destination”?

The Dash syncs the destination with the car every few seconds. Make sure the Commander is paired with the car and that active navigation is running.

Is there lag when using CarPlay or Android Auto?

The lag is usually under one second. If you experience more noticeable lag, restart both the Dash and your phone and update to the latest versions of the Dash and Commander.

Does the Regen toggle work correctly?

At the moment, the Regen action behaves as a “Set” command rather than a true toggle. A fix is coming in a future update.

Will the Dash support tire pressure monitoring (TPMS)?

Yes, TPMS is a highly requested feature and is on the roadmap.

Is there a Stealth Mode or full blackout mode?

A full blackout or “screen clean” mode for night driving is being considered for a future update.

Can I see the blind spot camera on the Dash?

Due to Tesla video feed limitations, the Dash cannot display the live camera feed. It can show a blind spot warning indicator instead.

Will there be support for more languages?

Yes, additional languages (including Dutch) are planned for future updates.
