As winter transitions into summer, it’s time to swap your tires. As temperatures rise and road conditions improve, switching to summer tires can make your Tesla more efficient to drive.

But how much of a difference do tires actually make when it comes to energy consumption?

To find out, we put our 2025 Tesla Model Y Premium to the test on two separate trips. The first run was completed with winter tires, while the second used a set of summer tires on the exact same route.

If you'd like to see how it went, make sure to watch the video below:

Test Design

The rules of the test were simple:

1.  Both trips followed the same 180 km route.

2. We maintained a consistent speed of approximately 120 km/h.

3. We monitored remaining battery capacity and energy consumption using both the S3XY Dash and Tesla's built-in trip statistics.

For the winter test, we used 20-inch Pirelli Sotto Zero tires which have been driven for 5,000 km. For the summer test, we switched to Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires with 7,000 km.

It's also worth noting that during both trips the air conditioning was set to 21 degrees Celsius.

The Model Y Premium Launch Edition is equipped with an NMC battery pack offering 75 kWh of usable capacity. In our case, we've owned the vehicle for a little over a year, so some level of battery degradation is to be expected.

Results

WINTER TEST

Start

- SOC: 95%

- Remaining Capacity: 71.6 kWh

Finish

- SOC: 48%

- Remaining Capacity: 37.3 kWh

Consumption

- Average Consumption: 186.4 Wh/km

- Energy Used (Tesla Screen): 33.2 kWh

- Energy Left (S3XY Dash): 34.3 kWh

SUMMER TEST

Start

- SOC: 63%

- Remaining Capacity: 48.5 kWh

Finish

- SOC: 21%

- Remaining Capacity: 18.5 kWh

Consumption

- Average Consumption: 164.1 Wh/km

- Energy Used (Tesla Screen): 29.3 kWh

- Energy Left (S3XY Dash): 30.0 kWh

Conclusion

The results clearly show that summer tires improve both efficiency and range.

To put the numbers into perspective, if the vehicle started at 100% SOC in both scenarios, the estimated range would be:

- Winter Tires: ~408 km

- Summer Tires: ~463 km

That's approximately 55 km of additional range when using summer tires, representing an improvement of about 13.5%.

For a change that every Tesla owner makes seasonally anyway, that's a surprisingly significant difference.
