One of the biggest differences between the Tesla Model Y Standard and the Premium versions is the suspension.

Many people assume that because the Standard model is more affordable, its ride quality must be significantly worse than the Premium variant. But is that really the case in everyday driving?

To find out, we compared both versions of the Tesla Model Y in a series of real-world suspension tests, evaluating how they perform over bumps, rough roads, and sharp cornering.

Test Design

The first vehicle in this comparison was the Tesla Model Y Standard, which is equipped with conventional passive shock absorbers, similar to the suspension systems found in many mainstream passenger cars. They have a fixed damping curve, meaning their behavior doesn’t change much as the road conditions shift.

The second vehicle was the Tesla Model Y Premium, featuring Tesla's more advanced suspension with frequency-dependent dampers. Unlike passive dampers, these automatically adapt to different road conditions, allowing the suspension to respond differently to small road imperfections and larger impacts.

To compare the two fairly, both vehicles were driven on the same roads, under the same conditions, and at identical speeds throughout every test.

Test 1: Low-Speed Comfort

We drove both cars over multiple speed bumps and elevated road imperfections at low speeds to evaluate how well each suspension absorbed impacts.

Subjectively, the two vehicles felt remarkably similar. In fact, the difference was so small that it was difficult to distinguish one from the other while driving.

To add some objective measurements, we used a seismometer to record cabin vibrations during the test.

We even attempted a simple water glass test by placing identical amounts of liquid inside each vehicle to see which suspension would better control movement. However, the results were virtually identical, so we decided not to include that experiment in the final evaluation.

For normal city driving over speed bumps and minor road imperfections, both cars performed surprisingly well. While neither delivers the plush ride quality of a luxury car, the difference between them at low speeds was minimal.

Test 2: Rough Roads at Higher Speeds

Next, we increased the speed to approximately 70 km/h and drove both vehicles over a very uneven stretch of road.

This is where the differences became immediately apparent.

The Standard Model Y felt noticeably firmer and transmitted far more of the road surface into the cabin. Larger potholes also produced a pronounced thud, making impacts feel harsher for both the driver and passengers.

The Premium model delivered a much more composed experience.

Its frequency-dependent dampers absorbed small imperfections more effectively while also reducing the harshness of larger impacts, resulting in a noticeably smoother ride.

On rough roads, the Premium suspension clearly demonstrated its advantage.

Test 3: Handling and Stability

Our final test evaluated how both vehicles behave during rapid changes of direction.

To simulate an emergency avoidance maneuver, we performed a series of sharp turns as well as wider sweeping corners to observe how each suspension managed body movement and weight transfer.

The Premium Model Y remained extremely stable throughout the entire test. Whether making gradual high-speed turns or sudden steering inputs, the suspension controlled body roll exceptionally well, keeping both the driver and passenger comfortable without excessive movement inside the cabin.

The Standard Model Y told a different story.

Its passive suspension struggled to react as quickly during sudden weight transfers. The vehicle leaned significantly from side to side, and occupants had a much harder time remaining comfortably seated during aggressive maneuvers.

Even during wider corners, where the car had more time to settle, the Premium model still inspired noticeably more confidence.

Considering the size and weight of the Model Y, the Premium suspension delivered an impressively stable driving experience.

Conclusion

So, is the approximately $7,000 price difference worth it?

Our answer depends on how and where you drive.

If your Model Y is primarily a city commuter, or you live in a country with smooth, well-maintained roads, such as Germany, the Standard version offers very respectable ride quality and will likely satisfy most drivers.

However, if you regularly take long road trips, frequently drive on rough roads, or live in an area with winding routes that demand better stability and comfort, the Premium model offers a substantial improvement.
